Course Description

During this three-week online course that mixes live instructor-led sessions with online discussions and personalized help from course facilitators, you will learn the key principles of 3D printing with polymers, the most widely used material in the 3D printing industry. This course will cover the process of 3D printing with polymers from design through execution, highlighting key concepts and modeling techniques. It will cover the various available polymers (including thermoplastics, elastomers, thermosets, functional polymers, polymer blends and more), the benefits and uses of each, including cost and accessibility. By the end of this course, you will have gained a deep understanding of the 3D printing with polymers – both the technology and its many uses, and will walk away with insight into how you might apply 3D printing with polymers to your upcoming ventures.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Understand the basic principles of 3D printing with polymers, its benefits, key uses, and applications.
  • Learn about multiple methodologies for approaching 3D printing with polymers, in both industrial and non-industrial contexts.
  • Know the materials and processes involved in 3D printing with polymers, and understand when to employ which, based on capability, mechanical properties, and cost.
  • Learn about design considerations and specifications for 3D printing in polymers.

All sessions are recorded and archived so you can watch any time. No travel required!

Optional project-based work with 1-on-1 feedback from an instructor in our online workshop discussion forums.

Bonus: Register early and get immediate access to archival video recordings from related courses.

Session 2: Introduction to 3D Printing with Polymers

With polymers being the most utilized material in the 3D printing industry, it is a great starting material for novice 3D printers. In this opening session of 3D Printing with Polymers, you’ll receive an overview of the 3D printing process with polymers from start to finish, including its benefits, uses, and diverse applications.

Week 2

October 23, 2018
Session 1
11:00 – 11:45am ET
Session 2
11:45am – 12:30pm ET

Speaker: Mike Vasquez
Founder 3Degrees

Session 1 – Materials Validation for Production Parts

As more organizations incorporate additive manufacturing systems to produce production parts, it is becoming clear that successfully moving beyond prototyping requires a more advanced and thoughtful material’s strategy. To achieve the desired outcomes, organizations now need to learn how to build a methodical and scalable system for measuring and characterizing materials that are going into your processing systems. This talk will discuss best practices and standards for developing and executing a successful strategy for both metals and polymers — from benchmarking properties, to creating appropriate operating/storage instructions, to testing and then ultimately tracking the lifecycle of materials throughout your production workflow.

Speaker: James Murphy
General Manager International Business
HLH Prototypes Co Ltd

Session 2 – Additive vs subtractive for prototyping

  • Aspects of polymer designs, what materials are best for different designs
  • Consideration of material properties and how they affect design considerations

Week 3
