Printrbot is known for their quality, yet affordable 3D Printers, and are recognized by many for their $599 Simple 3D Printers. Printrbot CEO Brook Drumm has been quite the innovator, selling both assembled 3D printers as well as 3D printer kits to please the DIY community for the past several years.
It’s not just a business for Drumm, though. 3D printing, and the designing of 3D printers is one of his hobbies. Just this past week, Brook Drumm posted on several social media sites, photos of a new 3D printer that he has created.
The printer, I must say is quite amazing looking. It appears to be extremely solid and sturdy, and the build envelope is massive. While we haven’t seen any objects that have been printed with it, knowing Drumm and his work, it certainly must be able to produce quite the print.
“One of my never ending r&d efforts, as a trade for photo work from 11dy,” Drumm posted on Google+. “I miss it already. Sort of a metal ‘Go Large’. Talk about rigid. One step closer to custom built very large printers. Getting a kick out of pulling together existing parts from my repertoire – a two day build here.”
While this printer was made strictly for a colleague, I personally wouldn’t be surprised to see Printrbot start selling kits for a similar printer. They already offer the Printrbot Go Large 3D printer, fully assembled for $1,999 – a printer that has a 24″ x 12″ x 12″ build volume. This one appears to be of higher quality and also more aesthetically pleasing than the ‘Go Large’.
I asked Drumm if he has any plans to start manufacturing these and selling them. He didn’t give me a very clear answer, but you can tell that it is certainly something that he may consider.
“It was for fun, but [I’m] listening to feedback,” he told me.
What do you think of Drumm’s latest 3D printer project? Would you have any use for a printer this size? What would you be willing to pay? Discuss in the ‘Brook Drumm’s large 3D printer‘ thread on 3DPB.com.
