Last year, diversified business Jumbo Group, which is the UAE’s leading distributor of IT and consumer electronics, launched a new business dedicated to 3D printing called Jumbo 3D Manufacturing. Now, the company is partnering up with Modern Bionic Limb Solutions (MOBILIS) Medical Manufacturing to enable 3D manufacturing in healthcare in the UAE and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) regions.
“3D Manufacturing is transforming the world we live in – especially healthcare where its benefits are tremendous. Traditionally, most of the products are either manufactured manually or through machines, which takes a lot of time and drives up the cost. Our partnership with Mobilis will help reduce this substantially and improve patient outcomes,” Latik Gupta, Head of Jumbo Enterprise, stated in a press release sent to 3DPrint.com.
Together, the two companies will work to remotely 3D print prosthetic covers, hand and leg splints, sockets, orthotics, and other medical devices at the advanced Jumbo 3D Manufacturing development center in Jebel Ali, which was set up last year and uses HP’s Multi Jet Fusion technology, in addition to other 3D products focused on applications in the dental and medical sectors.
Jumbo 3D Manufacturing is aligned with the famous Dubai 3D Printing Strategy to help drive economic growth in the UAE, and the facility, which also includes finishing, post-processing, and painting equipment, has helped facilitate easy 3D printing adoption across the region for multiple applications.
“We are pleased to partner with a like-minded organization like Jumbo that is committed to improving the lives of people through technology,” said Makram and Sofyen Tebbi, the Orthotic and Prosthetic Specialists who established MOBILIS. “3D printing technology enables the creation of new designs which cannot be achieved through conventional methods. Jumbo’s use of HP Jet Fusion technology ensures that clients get the medical support they need when it comes to producing prosthetics and other devices, and we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with them.”
Dubai-based MOBILIS is a growing startup that manufactures and distributes high-quality custom orthotics, prosthetics, seating systems, and other solutions on-demand. The company actually created a smart factory concept in the UAE specifically for orthotics and prosthetics, which uses an assembly line model and was designed for one-flow manufacturing; it is supported by 3D printing, cloud computing, electronic data exchange technologies and electronic line assembly, and robotic manufacturing.
Prosthetics are a patient-specific product, which means that customizing these devices is important so individual patients can get the most out of them. Using 3D printing to fabricate prostheses and prosthetic implants makes the development process easier, shortens production time by 35% when compared to conventional methods, decreases how long the patient is in the operating room, and even improves their outcomes post-surgery.
Already, MOBILIS and Jumbo 3D Manufacturing have worked on 30 pilot cases and prototyping projects together. While it typically takes Jumbo somewhere between 20-30 hours to complete a case using traditional methods of manufacturing, 3D printing has helped bring that time down to just 12-16 hours. The company believes that 3D printing, especially in terms of scalability, has a bright future ahead in the GCC.
