In 2009, the Finnish company Rovio released an app called Angry Birds in which a serious of perturbed birds defend their eggs from a series of inexplicably aggressive porcine attackers by flinging them (the pigs) into walls or crushing them under collapsing structures. It doesn’t matter that there is no logic or sense to this, because it was fun. The graphics are engaging, the game inexpensive, and the satisfaction of defeating unnecessarily bellicose aggressors by popping them led to the game series becoming the most downloaded freemium game of all time, with 3 billion collective downloads.

Angry Birds hasn’t just remained a game, it has spun off into a TV series, a movie franchise, and even a tool for teaching concepts in Yoga as understood and interpreted by the Hare Krishna in a five-part essay titled “Angry Birds Yoga — How to Eliminate the Green Pigs in Your Life” written by Giridhari Dasa. The latest in this public fascination with the characters is being captured in a collaboration between MyMiniFactory and the releasing company Rovio to create 3D printed characters based on the 2016 version of the game. In that version, there are over 100 characters that users can hatch from eggs and evolve, all while still working to remove those pesky piggies from Bird Island.

MyMiniFactory is the world’s leading 3D printable object-sharing platform, where 9000 digital 3D designers from around the world upload and share over 45,000 high quality guaranteed 3D printable files. In this campaign, a new figurine was added each day for a week to the file library of MyMiniFactory and made available for download and printing beginning May 28th. As an added incentive to makers, a contest is running in which the user who creates the best 3D print of a character will receive a free spool of filament which they can either use to print or simply hurl at a domesticated farm animal of their choice.

The seven figures that were released as part of this promotion are Red, Darlene, Carter, Dutch, Matilda, Steve and Zain. Red is the main character and most familiar bird as he has been the face of the game since its beginning. Darlene is a hefty bird with a Deadpool obsession and the same short and long term memory loss as many of her avian compatriots. Carter is a twist on the original red bird, bearing a scar over his eye while Dutch is the beefcake with the brains of a, well, a bird. Matilda and Steve (aka Steven Seagull) are white birds and Zain is a bug-eyed black bird who appears to be overburdened with personal issues.

While they can be printed in any color filament, their silhouettes are unmistakable and the pocket sized creatures are sure to be a hit with fans of the game.
