m2Even though their stock price is down considerably over the last several months, 3D Systems (3DS) continues to make moves to ensure its future remains bright. As one of the leaders within the 3D printing space, the company understands the need to stay a step or two ahead of its competition, while acquiring companies which can add scope to their business model, and hiring those with the experience needed to run a multi-billion dollar company.

On Friday, 3D Systems announced the appointment of a new Vice President of Consumer Products, hiring Peter Theran, who had been managing reseller retail at Bose Corporation, among his other positions there over a 20 year span. Today, the company announced yet another big hiring in that of Mark Wright. Wright will take on the role of Chief Operating Officer after a distinguished 18 year career with EMC Corporation.

His main role with the company will be to work alongside President and CEO Avi Reichental and other senior leaders in an attempt to scale up the company’s commercial and manufacturing operations after a recent string of acquisitions. Last week the company warned that their quarterly earnings will fall short of expectations after failing to meet their internal targets in achieving the scaling of their manufacturing framework.

“We are privileged to have an executive of Mark’s experience join our team, as we turn our attention to fine tuning and scaling our operations,” said Avi Reichental, President and Chief Executive Officer, 3DS. “I am certain that Mark’s considerable talents will help take our business to the next level.”

The Massachusetts native’s last role at EMC, a web-based data storage and computing systems company, was SVP Business Development and Operations for EMC and Lenovo’s joint venture, LenovaEMC. Here Wright was tasked at overseeing the development of a multi-billion dollar relationship as the company awaited the closing of a deal with IBM System X. Prior to this position Wright had extensive experience with EMC, in which he held positions including COO of their Flash product division.

“Mark’s experience in managing fast-moving, high-tech, global businesses will be a tremendous asset to 3D Systems as we step up the execution of our profitable growth initiatives,” stated Reichental.

In a move certain to bolster 3D Systems’ manufacturing capabilities, Wright should play an important role in the company’s continued expansion. Let’s hear your thoughts on this hiring in the 3D Systems/Mark Wright forum thread on 3DPB.com.
