hall2We are just about four week away from what’s one of my favorite holidays, Halloween. I think the reason it ranks up there in ‘Brittney’s Book of Best Holidays’ is because it’s an awesome way to express one’s creativity. Decorations and Costumes, what more can someone obsessed with design, want out of a holiday, besides candy? Oh yeah, Halloween has that too!

CG Cookie, based in Geneva, Illinois, has teamed up with two major players within the 3D printing and modelling space, Shapeways, and Sketchfab, to bring us all a fun, creative design competition based around your favorite spooky holiday. Up for grabs? Over $1,000 worth of prizes!

This year’s topic will be ‘Jack-O’-Lanterns’, meaning you can pretty much be as creative as you like. Whether you want to create a model of a traditional spooky jack-o-lantern, or something entirely different, like one in the likeness of your favorite athlete or movie star, those options are all on the table.

To enter, there are several rules to follow to make sure your model is not disqualified before the judges even get to set their eyes on it. Make sure that the model you create is able to be 3D printed with Shapeways ‘Strong & Flexible” plastic, and is no larger than 100 x 100 x 100mm (3.9 inches). Also make sure that it is optimized to be printed in the first place. Are the walls of the model thick enough? Is it watertight? These are all attributes a model must possess in order to be a good 3D printing candidate.

Once you think you have the perfect design and perfect 3D printable model, it’s now time to export it as either a STL, DAE or OBJ file, and upload it to Shapeways, who will check your model for 3D printability.  Once done, you may now upload it to Sketchfab with the tag ‘CH2014’, and then submit your entry to CG Cookie by simply providing  them with your Sketchfab model URL.
