With design talent abounding and so much enthusiasm surrounding 3D design and printing, it should be interesting indeed to see the innovative new 3D accessory designs that make the cut in the OnePlus Creative Contest. With motivation to win an Ultimaker 2 3D printer, we’re also anticipating, as OnePlus predicts, “one hell of a talent fight.”
Recommending that designers looking for ideas check out their current accessories page, OnePlus stresses that designers must enter an original CAD file to be entered by March 19. Currently OnePlus has a page of streamlined accessories for the OnePlus One smartphone such as 3D models of phone cases, protectors, earphones, and data cables. With a world of innovation and inspiration to choose from, designers should be filling up another page for OnePlus One soon.
Twenty finalists and three top winners will be chosen in the design contest, with Ultimaker and OnePlus making the final decisions. This contest brings attention to accessories being offered by OnePlus currently, which are all based around the OnePlus One phone featuring a powerful processor, display, and battery. The camera is a 13 megapixel Sony Exmor IMX214, touted to give “astounding results” no matter the lighting, featuring double LED flash and six lenses. It features three microphones that work together for amazing sound, amongst a long list of other features.
With the smartphone being central to the lives of most people these days, and everyone experiencing a different need in terms of accessories, the contest is a fun new way to see how designers perceive not only needs for new items, but innovations regarding existing ones.
But let’s get to the good stuff. What can we win?
- For twenty finalists: an invite for the 64GB Sandstone Black OnePlus One for each
- Third place winner: JBL E1+ Earphones or 3 spools of Ultimaker filament
- Second place winner: a 64GB Sandstone Black OnePlus One
- First place winner: the Ultimaker 2 3D printer
You can submit multiple entries, and teams are welcome also. Your design must be original, with considerations to intellectual property rights of other people and businesses.
To enter you will want to download the necessary file and create your own accessory, posting it to YouMagine in .stl or step format. It must be a 3D printable file, as designs will be judged as to their “feasibility for printing on Ultimaker” as well of course their unique features, quality, and creativity.
Is this a contest you are thinking about entering? What new accessories do you think could be designed to accommodate the new One Plus phone? Tell us your thoughts in the OnePlus and Ultimaker Sponsor Creative Contest forum over at 3DPB.com.
