Poieo3D — the Family Friendly, Cleverly Designed 3D Printer — Launches on Kickstarter

p4Another day, another relatively affordable 3D printer has launched on Kickstarter. Many 3D printers we come by are not particularly good looking machines. In order to save on costs, you will often find printer manufacturers skimping on the exterior of the machines. This not only leaves an ugly skeleton of a printer, but also can cause safety issues, especially with young children around. Because of the various openings many of these printers have, it is relatively easy for a little one’s hand to slip in and perhaps get burnt on the scorching hotend.

Poieo3D, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, aims to be affordable yet family friendly, by offering a product which is capable of printing at high resolutions while also taking into account that children may be around or even using the machine themselves. The elegantly designed printer is factory calibrated and tested prior to shipping. All that’s needed is for the user to install the Poieo3D software, and children as young as seven can begin designing objects to be fabricated for school or just for fun.

“Poieo” is the Greek word meaning “to make, to produce, construct, form, or fashion, a thing out of something,” an apt name for a machine made for makers. The printer is constructed with aesthetics in mind, relying on a team of engineers and designers to create something which will not only perform exceptionally well, but also look good while it does so. Below are some of the general specifications of this new machines:

  • Print Technology: FFFp1
  • Printer Size: 38 x 30 x 27 cm
  • Printer Weight: Approximately 7 kg
  • Build Envelope: 200 x 100 x 100 mm
  • Nozzle Diameter: 0.3 mm
  • Filament Type/Size: Poieo3D PLA Filament at 1.75 mm
  • Supported File Types: Stl, Obj

As for pricing, early bird backers will be able to pick this machine up on Kickstarter for $649 CAD. Once the first 50 machines are sold, the price will jump up to $699 CAD. Additionally, there is a bulk printer offer available for $1,999 CAD which includes three machines, a deal which may be appealing to schools and other institutions. Poieo3D is looking to raise $100,000 CAD by December 31 in order to begin full scale production of their 3D printer. If all goes as planned the very first units will begin shipping in April of next year.
