3D scanning has been a rapidly developing technology that, until recently, was generally relegated to museums, hospitals and other industries rather than individuals. Lately, though, a number of companies have been working to put 3D scanning in the hands of the average citizen. One of those companies is itSeez3D, which develops user friendly scanning applications for mobile devices. In August, the company announced that they had ported their 3D scanner app to Intel’s RealSense platform and would be creating a new version of their application designed specifically for use on devices equipped with RealSense cameras. Today, itSeez3D has announced that the new application has officially been released.

DSC_3895_1Intel’s RealSense Camera R200 is a long range, high definition camera that was recently developed by the company for Intel Core M systems. The itSeez3D app developed for the device allows users to easily take photorealistic 3D scans and create models that can be shared on social media or printed. Compatible with Windows 8, 8.1 and 10, the app will, in the future, also have capabilities for using your 3D models for video games or virtual reality. It it also under development to be compatible with additional software platforms.

“More and more devices are now able to ‘see’ in 3D, and we’re very excited to leverage this worldchanging technology to make 3D scanning affordable and easy for everyone,” said Victor Erukhimov, CEO of itSeez3D. “3D scanning creates endless opportunities both for businesses and individuals and we can’t wait to see people using itSeez3D app on mobile devices enabled with Intel RealSense technology.”

The application, which is similar to the app developed by itSeez3D for iOS devices, is 3D scanning technology at its simplest. Users can take a full-body scan or portrait of a person or object simply by walking around it. The scan can then be saved for future editing. The 3D models can be printed or uploaded as is, or modified using several tools offered by the app. The itSeez3D application is now available for free download at the Intel RealSense App Showcase. It is currently available in English and Japanese.

“This is the first 3D scanning app for R200, so we’re very thrilled and excited to see new scans and applications of the app,” said Svetlana Golubeva, PR and Marketing Manager for itSeez3D.

I still remember what a novelty it was when cameras started appearing on mobile phones; my first cell phone was a simple flip phone, long before smart phones became commonplace. It took blurry, washed-out looking photos, but I was still thrilled that I could take pictures with my phone at all. I never would have imagined that 3D scanners would be incorporated into mobile devices not all that far into the future. But, as we see all the time, it doesn’t take long at all for the most extraordinary technology to become commonplace.
