3DMS Launches Kickstarter for Modular 3D Printers, Allowing You to Upsize or Downsize
The whole concept of a modular design is geared around a combination of minimalism and quality, as well as economics, and often includes the inclination to leave as small a footprint as possible.
Space–and budget–are also often, not surprisingly, an issue. In order to make way for your priorities–which in this case obviously includes 3D printing at the top of the list–3D Modular Systems has developed modular 3D printers at both ends of the spectrum, for medium and extra large. So whether you want to start at an average size for 3D printing with equipment, or go all out, they offer a way for you pick a foundation and then add–or take away–from there. Just launching a Kickstarter campaign, 3DMS is hoping to raise €5,000 (about $5,680 USD) by July 19.
While the Scalar M and Scalar X offer the convenient modular concept they are also about much, much more in terms of features and innovation. 3DMS, based in France, has incorporated first and foremost a solid, advanced design into each printer, as well as:
- Inductive proximity sensors
- Quiet production due to noise canceling bearings
- Industrial grade couplers
- High precision extruders
- Multiple hotend support
The Scalar M is, obviously, the smaller of the two choices, but still offers a fairly large print size area of 30 x 22 x 25 cm. The XL is a bigger piece of machinery offering all the same features, but with the extended bonus of the larger 40 x 30 x 35 cm build volume.
In terms of what the whole modular concept means specifically, both the M and XL models allow for the obvious upsizing and downsizing. You can increase the print size if you need to 3D print a larger model–or you can shrink things down when you are trying to make more space. Various ‘optimizations’ are available as well so that you can add more stability or print faster.
3DMS is still developing some other options like the ability to ‘box’ the printer for child/pet safety issues or other needs, to include dealing with materials. They will also soon be allowing for a foldable design, as well as the ability to change the LCD screen or even add or change a hotend. When it comes to adding parts, you are able to download the files and 3D print them yourself–just adding to efficiency of the products further. (Downgrade and expansion kits will be available at 3DMS upon completion of the Kickstarter campaign.)
Those pledging their support for the campaign are able to get in on some good early bird deals, beginning at €650 (about $738 USD) for the Scalar M, to include a fully assembled printer with LCD screen, SD card support, and a V7 semi-metal Aluhotend. A small supply (1kg) of PLA 3D printing filament is included as well. Parisians luck out, as for only a bit more at the price of €845, one of the 3DMS team members will offer personal service of the 3D printer along with two hours of setup and training.
Pledges of €890 receive the Scalar XL with all of the same details in terms of preassembly and what’s included. For €990, Parisians, again, can have the two-hour full set up and training.
Funds will used to fund launch of their products as well as expanding in both France and all of Europe. Deliveries are expected to begin in September and October, with shipping available to only some countries.
