Redmond says he’s just completing the design of of his 3D Painter Printer, a device designed to paint models using a rotating stage, 3D software and sensing technology to selected the areas which require painting via a spray system.

He says the final prototype is currently being built in Shenzhen, China, and that should he reach his goal on Kickstarter, it will be produced in Ireland.

Though the project is woefully thin on details – and there are no examples of the device at work – Redmond describes how it works like this: A user will insert the 3D printed model into the device, choose the necessary colors via an included software program and then watch the magic happen while the model moves on a rotating table as paint is applied.

According to Redmond, the printer will be capable of painting models in CYMK colors and uses an inexpensive, but high quality paint. The Painter 3D machine will accept a maximum-sized model roughly the size of an 8-inch cube, will include USB 3.0 and SD card slots, has a fully removable Perspex dome top, a heating element, a fan and a particle collection system.

8a8f45e3db4fd365b12f9d86997f271a_originalA blue LED display includes a simple start, pause and stop button-driven menu, and Redmond says it’s capable of painting items at a high resolution by using “op-eye technology” to identify and select the marking features of the item it needs to paint.

“We Believe in simplistic and strong functionality, we are a new company that needs your support and trust to get these out on shelves,” Redmond says of the project.

He adds that he already has his team in place to get the project moving on the Chinese front, and he pledges to make sure they’re on site “to keep the ball rolling and get it done and on time.”

“The only delays we can imagine are on the production of these items, as this is the only part of the project that is out of our hands, but we will be overseeing the project as it gets built in the factories and will guarantee the high standard of quality we believe in,” Redmond says.

He says he expects the retail price of the 3D Painter to be a €2799 (or nearly $3200) plus shipping, and he hopes to begin shipping the device by February of next year. If you take part in the Kickstarter, a pledge of €2,499, or about $2,851, will get you one of the second batch of 3D Painters and ink, the necessary software and a T shirt.
