Back in January, we did a story about a New York City-based company called Senvol. The company sees themselves as the go-to source for information when it comes to manufacturing via additive manufacturing technology. If a company is considering switching to additive, vs. subtractive manufacturing, Senvol is where to turn for cost and supply chain analysis, market research and sizing, and as of January, 3D printer and materials research.
As we mentioned in the past, Senvol uses their proprietary algorithms to determine if a specific part would be better off being created via 3D printing, as compared to traditional manufacturing methods. This, combined with their 3D printer and materials database, which now provides technical specifications for over 350 3D printers, and over 500 available materials used within additive manufacturing, makes Senvol a must-use resource for any company that’s at least considering transitioning to this technology.
The free database is really where it’s all at. Up until today, anyone could easily search the Senvol database for a machine based on build envelope, material properties, technology, or manufacturer. One field, just as important as any, which was missing from the database, was price. Today the company notified us that they have just launched a ‘search by price’ field within their database, enabling users to specify a price range and pull up the machines which match that criteria.
“We’re very excited to announce the addition of pricing information to the Senvol Database,” Senvol President Zach Simkin said. “It was something that a lot of people in the industry had asked us for. We’re pleased to continue to provide more and more information – information that companies need in order to make informed decisions about implementing additive manufacturing into their supply chain.”
Senvol continues to take user feedback seriously, and for a free service as valuable as it is, it’s refreshing to see this type of approach. Every week here at 3DPrint.com, we get numerous inquiries by businesses, large and small, asking us what our opinion would be on the perfect machine for their company. Although we’d like to think that we are somewhat qualified to answer some of these questions, the treasure trove of information provided within this database would make us think twice before providing any sort of education guess, instead of just linking them to Senvol. This database, along with perhaps a couple of Google searches is all they would ever need.
It is important to note that the prices of these machines are given in ranges for a reason, which Senvol President Annie Wang explained in the statement below:
“We work in close collaboration with the machine manufacturers. The price ranges in the Senvol Database reflect the fact that specific machine pricing can vary by location and by distribution channel.”
For those of you who were curious, the following pie chart shows the distribution of prices for the 350+ machines within the database. While the majority are under $250,000, there is still a fairly large percentage listed well over that figure.
Simkin also assures us that they are not finished yet. In fact, the database will continue to expand as the market grows, with new ways to search and, of course, new materials and machines.
“Specifically for the Senvol Database, our goal is to continue to expand the level of information that we provide for our users,” Simkin tells 3DPrint.com. “The additive manufacturing landscape is expanding quickly, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to manage all of the disparate pieces of information. With the Senvol Database, we will continue to look for ways to manage and make sense of additive manufacturing data.”
