A 3D Printed Kit Kat Helps Create a Sweet Marriage Proposal

I’m a sucker for a good proposal story; heck, I even enjoy a good promposal, even though at the same time I’m also afraid these might take away from a person’s experience during any future proposals of marriage. I guess it’s just the hopeless romantic in me – I adore thoughtful, lovely, and fun gestures, whether big or small. Whether you want to shoot off fireworks and get a blimp to write your beloved’s name and the words “Will you marry me?” up in the sky, set up an elaborate flash mob in the park, bake the ring into a cake, or simply get down on one knee when you’re alone together watching the sunrise, proposals can certainly be one of the most special moments in a person’s life. Another certainty – 3D printing can help make proposals even more special.

Evan Wilt knows this fact more than most. Last month, Wilt’s girlfriend Haley Byrd, who reports on Congress for The Weekly Standard magazine, posted on Twitter the embarrassing moment when he ate a Kit Kat bar the wrong way – yes, there is a right way. While most people follow what the classic “Gimme a break” jingle says and just break off one of the long pieces, Wilt bit the end right off the chocolate wafer bar.

Naturally, Twitter being what it is, many people who don’t even know the Washington, D.C.-based couple got involved and advised Byrd to dump Wilt. While Byrd thankfully did not listen to the hive mind and break up with him, the amusing moment went viral…and gave Wilt a great idea for a memorable proposal.

No, he didn’t propose to her with a unique, 3D printed engagement ring, or even a 3D printed replica of the engagement ring Prince Harry gave to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Instead, he got a little help from the employees at a certain chocolate company.

The people at Kit Kat were kind enough to help with Wilt’s proposal, and 3D printed a fantastic, and very realistic, fake Kit Kat bar, complete with a slot inside that was the perfect size for the (non-3D printed) engagement ring. The Kit Kat was 3D printed in Tough Resin on the Formlabs Form 2 by New York service bureau Voxel Magic.

Just days ago, Wilt popped the question to Byrd with his 3D printed Kit Kat bar, and she obviously said yes…she’d already stayed with him through his chocolate faux pas and – really, who could turn down something that great?

That’s not all Kit Kat did for the happy couple. In addition to 3D printing the candy bar-shaped ring box, the company also sent Byrd and Wilt a fantastic – and again really realistic – cake to celebrate their proposal and impending nuptials.

The official US Twitter account for Hershey Kit Kat posted, “From 3D printing to a lil Kit Kat magic, we were happy to give him a break and help with his proposal!”

Twitter loved the cute proposal just as much as the original genesis for the idea. Now this is what I call a sweet ending.
