alexander-mcqueenOne of the things I most enjoy about writing for 3DPrint.com is the staggering number of industries the world of 3D printing has made an impact on. Education, where teachers are bringing 3D printing into schools, and the medical field, where all kinds of 3D medical models are being used to change the face of medicine, and even save lives. Gaming, robotics, food, vehicles, Christmas, jewelry…no stone has been left unturned. Today, I’m writing about yet another industry where 3D printing is changing things up: fashion.

The world of 3D printing has officially booked a new high fashion runway show, now that luxury fashion house Alexander McQueen has developed an edgy, one-of-a-kind 3D printed umbrella as part of its autumn/winter 2016-17 collection. I am not ashamed to admit that I used to watch a lot of “America’s Next Top Model” and “Project Runway,” and so I was especially excited to write this story…those qualify as high fashion, right?

The limited edition piece is patterned in a black skull motif – too bad it wasn’t out in time for Halloween! It features an ergonomic, 3D printed handle, which perfectly fits the grasp of an actual human fist. Spooky…

The handle for the umbrella was created using an actual human handprint. The hand was fully 3D scanned, then 3D printed, to ensure a perfect grip, and the rest of the reflective handle was carved from silver tone brass. In addition to the striking 3D printed handle, the lightweight, collapsible umbrella features a wrap-around press stud fastening, engraved with the Alexander McQueen name, and tonal stitching throughout the umbrella fabric.

They work with luxury fashion labels on integrating 3D printing into their collections. The company offers a full 3D printing service for the luxury industries, including consulting on material, finishing and technology suitability, as well as design, development, prototyping, manufacturing, and finishing.

This isn’t the first time 3D printing has entered the fashion world, and it’s not even the first time it’s been down the runway. What makes this limited edition McQueen umbrella special is that it marks the first time that 3D printing has been used for series production on a high fashion product that is actually available in stores, rather than simply remaining on the runways. Retailing for $595, this stylish umbrella will not only keep you dry but will stand out in a crowd – and its 3D printed, fist-shaped grip will make it easy to hold onto even on the most blustery day. Discuss in the 3D Printed Umbrella forum at 3DPB.com.
