We have seen several companies leverage 3D printing as a way to expand their brand recognition. In most cases established brands release models of characters or objects related to their particular brand. We have seen this ev-3in Makerbot’s partnership with Sesame Street, as well as several other business ventures. As 3D printing edges its way into the mainstream, this trend will continue to spread througout various industries.

Having said this, 2K Games and Turtle Rock Studios seem to be a couple of the first companies to use 3D printing as a way to build excitement for a product which has yet to be released. We are talking about the highly anticipated monster-hunting video game ‘Evolve’. Today, 2K Games along with Turtle Rock Studios announced that they are making available for free, 3D models of the various monsters and hunters which the game is centered around.

Those interested in 3D printing any of the eight different hunter characters, which includes Maggie, Griffin, Hyde, Markov, Lazarus, Val, Bucket and Hank, can do so by simply selecting their desired character here, and then clicking on the ‘3D Print File’ button. If you are more of a monster type of person, then you can go here and choose between Kraken or Goliath. Once downloaded, the files can instantly be 3D printed on your home 3D printer. If you don’t have a 3D printer, then the files may be uploaded to services like Shapeways or Sculpteo, and for a small fee printed out and mailed to your doorstep.

Evolve is one of the most anticipated video games of the year. It was recently awarded “Game of Show” by the E3 2014 Game Critics Awards.ev-2

“Evolve continues to solidify its position as one of the most anticipated games of the year,” Christoph Hartmann, president of 2k Games said in a statement. “The accolades for Evolve highlight the excitement and desire for new IP on next-gen systems, and we are poised to deliver what we believe will be the defining next-gen experience of 2014.”

As if this multiplayer shooter didn’t have enough hype around it prior to its October 21st global release date on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, this 3D printing promotion will certainly add to the hype. The company asks that those who do 3D print out any of these characters, paint them, and then post them via social media with hashtag #4v1.

Feel free to also post your prints in the Evolve 3D printed character forum thread on 3DPB.com as well.  Below is a quick intro to the Evolve game as well as some details on the 3D models which are available.
