I recall when I first began looking into desktop 3D printers about three years ago, the material options available for most machines were either ABS or PLA, and a variety of colors. Back then I didn’t know any different, but looking back I realize how far the industry has come in a very short period of time.

Recently, I manned a booth at 3D Print Week NYC. At our booth we had a few 3D printed items which were used to entice attendees to come over so that we could then give them a pitch as to c2why 3DPrint.com and 3DPB.com are must-visit sites. By far the item that received the most interest from those passing by was a pair of 3D printed shoes, which had been designed by Michele Badia and printed with NinjaFlex’s flexible filament. There were probably 300-400 individuals who inquired about the material used for the shoes, many stunned that you could print using rubber-like filament. After all, 3D printing does seem to have a stigma about it that suggests that most items printed are cheap, useless, plastic trinkets.

The fact is that there are dozens of awesome materials out there, most which work with the majority of desktop FDM/FFF machines, and new materials are emerging almost daily.

Today ShenZhen Chenyue Technology Co., Ltd. announced one of these new materials. The company, based in ShenZhen, China, is known for their wide range of filament, offered mainly in Asia. Today’s announcement is for another flexible material that they call Golden Dolphin Flexible Filament.

Suitable for nearly every FDM/FFF printer, according to the company, this new filament comes in several colors including black, white, pink, yellow, purple, red, transparent, and transparent yellow. Below you will find the general specifications for this new line of filament, provided to us via email from the company (Note that the company’s website shows different specs. I assume that they simply have not updated their site yet):c4

  • Diameter: 1.75mm / 3.00mm (diameter can also be customized if desired)
  • Print Temperature: 200-220° C
  • Platform Temperature: 0-50° C
  • Suggested Print Speed: 30-60mm/sec

The filament–which is said to have outstanding thermal properties, and is available in both transparent and opaque colors–could have multiple uses for the avid 3D printing enthusiast. Chenyue Technology has not officially announced pricing details for this new line of filament yet, and they warn customers to keep the filament away from damp environments as it may cause less than optimum print quality.

Certainly the materials space within the 3D printing market is heating up. With more competition coming from all over the globe, we are sure to see continued innovation, which can only be a good thing for the consumer. Let us know if you have ever used any of the products that Chenyue Technology has to offer. Discuss in the New Flexible Filament forum thread on 3DPB.com.
