3D printing seemed to be all the rage at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show back in the beginning of the month. In fact, some of the largest crowds gathered at the show were seen surrounding the major 3d Printing company’s booths. There were several smartphone applications announced, and excitement built within the Android OS community. Then came a bit of a letdown. Several apps were available for Apple’s iOS, but those with Google’s Android OS smartphones, which represents 81% of all smartphone operating systems in the world, found themselves still waiting for releases.
Particularly, the crowds at CES 2014 were the most excited about the upcoming Thingiverse application to the Android Google Play Store. Apple has had the application on their App Store for 3 months now. Bre Pettis, the founder of Makerbot, which was acquired last year by Stratasys, had promised the Android version will be out inevitably. Weeks drug on, and finally it has been released today. Thus far the reviews in the Google Play Store have been overwhelmingly positive for the app, which can be downloaded free of charge right away.
The Thingiverse App, by Makerbot, certainly lives up to it’s reputation. It makes 3D Printing much more social, allowing users to share designs with a tap of their screen. Users can also quickly snap a photo of their recent 3D prints via their phone’s camera, and upload them so that the thriving Thingiverse community can revel at them.
