We have seen literally dozens of 3D printers launch because of Kickstarter, the world’s largest crowdfunding platform, but the filament industry has become somewhat stagnant. Today, Polymakr has launched a polymakr-featKickstarter project in which they are seeking funding to begin producing three new types of 3D printer filament. The Chinese company is seeking $25,000 on Kickstarter over the next month, offering several rewards to their backers, which include all three types of new filament.

The three new filaments are as follows:

PolyMax PLA:
This is a completely re-engineered PLA with strength which is 8.6 times that of the traditional PLA filament most hobbyists are used to. It also has a 20% higher impact and toughness than most ABS filaments. This means much less fracturing and cracking of printed objects. Basically this is a filament which has all the best attributes of both ABS and PLA, without most of the negatives.

PolyFlex:
This a a soft flexible filament with amazing printing quality. The goal of Polyflex is to give users a flexible soft filament that can be used with most 3D printers on the market today. It is available in both 1.75 and 3mm. It has very little tendancy to warp and does not require a heat plate. Additionally it can be printed at much faster rates than some of the flexible filaments on the market today.polymakr-1

PolyWood:
This filament is not actually wood, but mimics it quite well. Because of its porous structure, it has the look and feel of real carved wood. This is the first 3d printer foam material, which was created by stabalizing air bubbles within the material.  Finished prints look amazing, and unlike real wood filaments, clogging, and jamming within the extruder is not an issue.

The company, based in Shanghai, China, has been working on this project since the middle of 2012, and is seeking funds for raw material acquisition as well as for manufacturing equipment. Discuss these new filaments at the Polymakr forum thread.  Check out the Kickstarter project video below:
