3dp_makerbox_logoMonthly subscription boxes are big business, and dozens of companies have found massive success in a wide variety of different industries. There are monthly boxes for everything from toys to art supplies to makeup and beauty products to food and fresh produce. It took a while for 3D printing to get its own subscription boxes, mainly because no one could really figure out how to do it right, but we have finally ended up with a few great, but very different options. When Maker Box launched back in December 2015, it initially cost about $70 a month. But when new owners took over the name, they ended up dropping the tools and 3D printing accessories that were included in the first few boxes, and caused the high price, and the box has steadily grown in popularity since.

It turns out that what people really wanted all along were the filament samples, and based on customer feedback the monthly Maker Box decided to give everyone what they wanted. The box quickly dropped dramatically in price and each ended up including four different 50 gram filament samples each month. For $20 a month the box was a great deal, and certainly more cost effective for makers looking to just try a few new materials out rather than buying a full spool. Well it looks like since they started offering just the filament samples business has been really good, because this month Maker Box has announced yet another price drop and they are adding a new product.

From the email sent out to current Maker Box subscribers:

“We are excited to announce that with our rapid growth we are able to purchase larger bulk supplies. This has brought our costs down substantially and we are relaying our savings onto you! As our current subscribers may have noticed, we have switched you over to the new Premium subscription. We now have two options for you to choose from, more information can be found below. We are currently in the process of switching over from boxes to bags which will come inside of a padded envelope.”

Each monthly Maker Box Premium includes 4 sample rolls of filament while the Basic box includes 3 sample rolls.

The Maker Box Premium Subscription now costs only $17 and includes four 50 gram sample rolls of new 3D printing filaments every month. The box will also include free shipping in the United States, and discounts on 3D printing accessories and on full spools of the sample materials. All Premium members will also have the opportunity to win prizes that will be randomly inserted into their boxes.

Their Maker Box Basic Subscription is their new monthly product box that is only going to set you back $14 and will include three 50 gram sample rolls of filament. Basic will also include free shipping in the United States, as well as the discounts on 3D printing accessories and on full spools of the sample materials. Unfortunately Basic subscribers won’t have a chance to win the prizes.

One of the features of the Maker Box that I really like is the instructions that are included with each sample roll of filament. No one wants to waste what little there is of a sample filament roll trying to figure out the best printer settings. So the guys from Maker Box include a sticker on the front with written usage instructions, recommended printer settings and printing temperatures. It’s a nice way to prevent material waste, reduce the amount of failed prints and make your samples go further. Each sample is also sealed in a plastic bag with a silicate packet to prevent any moisture damage.

You can learn more about the Maker Box and find out how to subscribe to receive your own monthly box of filament samples over on the Maker Box website.

The guys at Maker Box just set up a discount code for 15% off of your first subscription box: Discount code – 3DPRINTCOM. Enjoy! Are you signing up? Discuss further in the Monthly Maker Box 3D Printing Filament forum over at 3DPB.com.
