You know that 3D printing must be making its way into the mainstream when an entire minute long national commercial is based around a 3D printer. It is kind of ironic, but RadioShack is in the midst of an image change, where they are seeking to shed their 80’s image and become the powerhouse of an electronics company that they were in the 1980’s
To do this they launched a series of funny commercials yesterday, all with the same theme which is “DIT, Do It Together.” The main ad, which was played during the Super Bowl, in front of an audience in the hundreds of millions, featured both fictional and real personalities from the 1980’s. In the ad, these characters all want their store back, so they raid it, taking the 80’s with them, hence forcing the company to change. In that particular commercial there was a brief appearance of a 3D printer sitting on a counter.
The more exciting commercial for the 3D printing industry is the one which began airing shortly after the game. The entire commercial features an Afinia H-Series 3D printer. The storyline of this one minute long television ad is quite humorous. A RadioShack employee explains to Jason, from the Friday The 13th movies, all the amazing things a 3D printer can be used for. At the same time, Jason finishes printing out a key: an exact copy of the employee’s house key. The commercial can be seen below in its entirety:
