These last few weeks have been very exciting from a materials standpoint within the 3D printing industry. There has been a lot of action both from the consumer desktop side of things, as well as the manufacturing side. One of the leaders within the industry, when it comes to filaments for desktop 3D printers, is privately held Dutch company colorFabb.
They are known for their unique line of filaments, unlike anything any other company has been offering. These include woodFill, bronzeFill, bambooFill, and other filaments that the company manufactures from PLA infused with actual wood or metal powder.
“BronzeFill has become a huge hit for colorFabb and we’ve seen many great examples of excellent 3D printed models on their social media,” explained the company. “Apparently printing with metal on desktop 3D printers is something the maker community is really interested in. Behind the scenes colorFabb has been busy developing a new metal filament”
Today, colorFabb has announced yet another unique filament called copperFill. It is similar to that of their popular bronzefill product, however, it offers a bit more of a rustic brown finish. As you can see from the pictures below, an object once printed with copperFill can be left as-is, or polished for a truly amazing look. The polished bronzeFill pieces we have seen are almost indistinguishable from actual bronze, unless you get very close to it or pick the object up.
Produced with a micronized copper powder which has been infused into a common PLA plastic, copperFill will print easily using an all metal hot-end. The company specifically refers to the MakerBot Replicator 2 hot-end, or the E3D hot-end. They warn against using any hot-ends which use a teflon isolator coupler, as the filament has been shown to clog these devices.
Pre-orders for copperFill have just opened. It is priced the same as colorFabb’s bronzeFill filament, at €49.95 per 750g spool. The pre-order period will run until the end of October, at which time the first orders will be shipped, and additional normal orders can then be placed.
Let us know if you have ordered this new filament, or if you have experience using colorFabb’s similar bronzeFill product. Discuss in the colorFabb copperFill forum thread on 3DPB.com. Below is a video showing off the print quality of objects fabricated with colorFabb’s similar bronzeFill.
