Our session 3 keynote, Alexander Berry, is the director and product designer at Sutrue: Handheld Suturing Devices. Sutrue is a startup medical device company responsible for developing an automated surgical suturing device for the operating room, and they are currently at the demo stage of the endoscopic version of the device. Along with his team, Berry has designed, prototyped, and begun to manufacture the fully-functional suturing device using 3D printing and CAD technology. In addition to the huge decrease in development time required for the production of the suturing devices, Sutrue has reduced their development costs from approximately $4.5 million to $64 thousand. You’ll hear all about how to prepare your prototypes for production with Berry on November 7.
One of our speakers in the final week of our course is Kat Ely, Principal Designer & Founder, CLEAR Design Lab. CLEAR Design Lab focuses on innovative design, rapid prototyping, and useable new technologies. They have worked on developing over 100 projects, running the gamut from consumer goods to robotics. One of their recent collaborations was with Franklin Robotics, for whom they designed and autonomous garden weed-killing robot. They set to work on designing an aesthetically pleasing, intuitively functioning prototype, while maintaining technical and technological integrity via features such as waterproofing, agility, and ergonomics. Their clever design is as visually appealing as it is useful. Other recent prototyping projects from CLEAR Design Lab include prototyping and manufacturing the components of a robotic hand with RightHand Robotics, and developing a user-friendly but technologically advanced weather station with FarmHub. During her session on November 14, Ely will discuss the ins and outs of mold making for prototypes, drawing on her many years of hands-on experience.
