This Week’s 3D Hubs Events Celebrate 3D Modeling, Scanning, & Printing Technologies

Events this week held at various 3D Hubs locations around the world include everything from introductions to workshops–to parties! This last I find particularly appropriate, as three of these events are held on my birthday, tomorrow, but somehow I get the feeling that they’re celebrating technology more than anything else. From San Francisco to the Netherlands, check out what’s in store this week with 3D Hubs’ events!

Design to Print: An Introduction to 3D modeling in Autodesk Fusion 360 San Francisco | San Francisco, CA

Held yesterday, September 21, this event was hosted following an “overwhelmingly positive response to [their] first workshop,” in order to present the fundamentals of Fusion 360 to newer makers, including those as young as middle school age. For a $15 ticket, participants would learn to create their own custom lampshade, receiving a 3.5-hour workshop, $15 voucher to print their design via 3D Hubs, and some great drinks and snacks. Hosted by 3D Hubs San Francisco Mayor Maddie Smith at the Market Street Autodesk Gallery, the two-part workshop included a first section on the basics of Fusion 360 followed by a “make yours unique” focus on creation.

Design & Print Your Moat Boat for Maker Faire with 3D Hubs OSMM Tinkercad & Ultimaker | New York City, NY

The first of the events to be held Wednesday, September 23rd, this Tinkercad-focused event takes place in NYC, and it begins boldly: “Are you ready to race?” Another follow-up event following proven popularity of a previous gathering, this free Moat Boat gathering will get participants ready for the Moat Boat Paddle Battle on September 27th at the New York Maker Faire. A team effort between Ocean State Maker Mill, SeeMeCNC, and MAKE behind the boat race, and OSMM, Tinkercad, and Ultimaker for the workshop, participants will be able to design their own boat. A 2-hour Tinkercad workshop will help to design a boat, then Ultimaker will 3D print that design. Of course, 3D Hubs New York Mayor Dano points out, there will also be “drinks, snacks & loads of socializing” at the event, as well.

3D Hubs & Sketchfab 3D Scanner Party Breda | Breda, Netherlands

The next event to be held on Wednesday the 23rd is located in the Netherlands, where for a €5 ticket, participants will be welcomed to the party. Charlotte, 3D Hubs Mayor Breda, is happy to introduce the curious to 3D scanning, noting that “This is your opportunity to get yourself a 3D printed Mini-Me or get grandma’s tableware scanned and restored to its original glory.” With the ability to scan objects or yourself, the team will “give you a quick overview of how 3D scanning works, and provide drinks and snacks for you to enjoy,” producing files on Sketchfab. Sounds like a party to me!

3D (Hubs) Scanner Party! | Den Bosch, Netherlands

Celebrating again with a party focused on 3D scanning technology, the Netherlands’ Deb Bosch community, headed up by Mayor Manon Mostert – van der Sar, is looking to follow up the success seen at their 3D Pop-Up Museum event with an educational and fun scanner party. Presenting various 3D scanners and allowing for the creation of a 3D scanned and printed selfie (or anything that can be scanned!), the event will take place Wednesday at the Spark Campus. Participants are encouraged to bring a 3D scanner and/or printer if they have one, and everyone will learn about the possibilities that 3D scanning technology presents.

3D Hubs Tinkercad Workshop: Design & 3D Print a Clasp for Your Lumo Lift | New York City, NY

NYC is busy this week, as Maker Faire Week NY presents great opportunities–and so 3D Hubs NY Mayor Dano certainly offers a full calendar, with the opportunity to “customize your #fitlife” on Thursday the 24th. Held in Chelsea at the Autodesk New York office, for a $15 ticket participants can use Tinkercad to design “an interchangeable 3D printed clasp for the Lumo Lift,” as the hub has “joined forces with Tinkercad and Lumo Body Tech” for this event. Geared toward makers of all skill levels, the 2-hour Tinkercad workshop will also present participants with a 3D Hubs voucher for $15 so they can print out their designs.

3D Printing Workshop | Salt Lake City, UT

Rounding out the week, Friday, September 25th, the Salt Lake City Hub, led by Mayor Zach, has “a fun evening planned with workshops to fit all.” Whether you are looking to build your own 3D printer; learn the basics of Tinkercad, 123design, or other 3D modeling tools; calibrate a 3D printer; try out a variety of 3D printers and 3D printing pens; or just show off your own machinery, this broad-based workshop offers something for everyone. For those interested in building 3D printers, two different kits will be available for purchase and creation: a delta-based 3D printer kit ($250) or a Prusa i3 kit (around $350-$370).
