First Official 3D Hubs ‘Talk Design’ Contest Focuses on 3D Printed GoPro HERO4 Session Accessories

CHDHS-101_main3Nick Woodman founded GoPro in 2002 after a surfing trip to Australia. A couple of years down the road, Woodman’s company sold its first camera system, but it was the fixed-lens, digital HD version of the GoPro video camera which broke through into history. Tiny, lightweight, and simple to mount on a variety of surfaces, the GoPro camera is now the obvious choice for videographers looking to capture action sequences.

Now 3D Hubs says they thought GoPro accessories would be the ideal choice for the subject of their first 3D Hubs Talk Design Contest as well.

The team at 3D Hubs say 3D printing is ideally suited to servicing these cool cameras, and they add that the launch of the new GoPro HERO4 Session was an ideal way to showcase this latest Design Competition. They say the cubic shape of the new HERO4 Session lends itself to design tweaks, and thus the contest brief is simple:

“Create an innovative accessory which is original in its design and fit for purpose.”

They provide an .STL file which can serve as the basis of new designs, and it’s a simplified block with correctly-sized dimensions for the GoPro HERO4 Session.

And if you manage to come up with the perfect idea, rest assured the prize up for grabs will make for some shiny happy printing.

The winner, they say, will have his or her choice, and prizes appeal to owners of 3D printers and non-owners alike, with a choice between a 500g spool of either Proto-pasta Stainless Steel or Carbon Fiber PLA filaments, or else a $100 credit for use at 3DHubs.

Either way, they say the winning entry will have the advantage of exposure:

“We will feature your kickass design on all our social media channels, showcasing your skills to over 50,000 3D Hubs fans.”

The contest rules are reasonably simple. You’ll need to design an innovative accessory for the new GoPro HERO4 Session camera – which is of course 3D printable – and the 3D printed parts can be used in conjunction with non-printed parts as well. They recommend that you use the cube block provided or even make something for the normal GoPro camera mounts. The deadline for submission to the contest is July, 31, 2015, so you’ll have to get busy if you want to win. As for the judging criteria, the entries will be evaluated for originality, functionality, and 3D printing viability. They’ll be judged by 3D Hubs and Proto-pasta employees. You’ll need to submit an STL, OBJ of your design along with a brief description of the design and its intended use.
