Sketchfab & 3DPrinterOS Ready to HTML5-Bomb Facebook

3dprinteros sketchfab facebook3DPrinterOS and Sketchfab are pushing the boundaries of their partnership with this latest addition, an initiative which sees the addition of multiple features to 3DPrinterOS.

3DPrinterOS is “the standard operating system for 3D printing,” and their software is made to let users edit, fix, slice, manage, share, and print objects – from any web-enabled device. Since the launch of their system earlier this year, 3DPrinterOS has been used for some 7500 hours of 3D printing.

Now the company says users have access to an entire 3D model search engine courtesy of leading 3D content database Sketchfab.

And that’s not the end of the story. Using the “Sketchfab to Facebook” application within 3DPrinterOS, users can share 3D models directly from 3DPrinterOS to Facebook. According to Sketchfab, there are already some 34,000 files accessible through 3DPrinterOS, and those files and projects can be easily shared straight to the timeline of the world’s most used social network to allow their friends to browse content in 3D without leaving the Facebook feed.

“We had the chance to try 3DPrinterOS at the NYC 3D Print Show and we were amazed by the quality of their solution and their fast growth,” says Corentin Metgy, the Head of Business Development at Sketchfab. “They are building the first 3D printing operating system, and we’re excited that they have chosen Sketchfab to bring a social dimension to their platform.”

Sketchfab just closed a $7 million Series A funding deal led by FirstMark Capital, and the application integrates with major 3D content building tools and publishing platforms. Sketchfab is supported in Photoshop, Facebook and Microsoft HoloLens.

John Dogru, the CEO of 3DPrinterOS, says being able to access and share 3D printable content in social networks is critical to the widespread adoption of 3D printing.

“Adding Sketchfab’s leading content database and viewing engine into 3DPrinterOS makes it easier for someone of any skill level to turn an idea into a physical object and share it with the world,” Dogru said.

And it all comes down to rich HTML5 content. Users browsing their models can interact with the model with their finger – or a mouse – by rotating it a full 360 degrees in any direction via the Sketchfab HTML 5 viewer. Sketchfab files have been embeddable within Facebook since February. With Facebook support for the real-time 3D player within a user’s timeline feed, this collaboration with 3DPrinterOS may well push 3D modeling and printing into the mainstream.

And who knows, now that designers can share their models from 3DPrinterOS and Sketchfab directly to Facebook, we may begin to see some 3D printable content go ‘viral.’
