PYOD Launches Kickstarter: Customize your own 3D printed sex toy

“Nobody knows you like you do,” they say.

“They,” in this case, are PYOD, a new company that is so dedicated to personalizing an already quite personal experience that they’ve named themselves for it. Print Your Own Dildo is here to do exactly that: let you design and 3D print your very own personal sex toy.

PYOD has just launched their Kickstarter campaign, seeking to get their novel idea off their drawing board and into your… er, hands. The campaign, which launched on Tuesday (December 16th), is seeking €100,000 by January 15th to bring this unique idea to fruition. Amsterdam-based PYOD is certainly doing its part to keep the Netherlands’ reputation as an innovative center for the sex product industry going, and bringing it all to the latest technology.

From start to finish, the entire design is up to you. PYOD has created an app — for both Android and iOS — where you can intuitively design your ideal personal item. Shape it, bend it, widen certain parts, all from the convenience of your own mobile device. The app is at the heart of PYOD’s customizing mission to make the personal even more personal, and the Kickstarter funding is intended to back PYOD’s development efforts.

Once you’ve customized your suited-to-your-tastes design, PYOD takes the files from the app and sends them to a 3D printer. PYOD works with an unnamed team of experienced 3D printers to produce their products. While they’re not clear on what type of technology is used on their 3D printer, they do state that ABS is the material of choice for their products.

ABS is a hard, hypoallergenic thermoplastic material that PYOD chose as this “high end material is perfect for a long time of pleasure.” PYOD has also developed an after-treatment “that makes the material smooth and waterproof.” Their toys are meant to work well with water-, silicone-, and oil-based lubricants, which is an important consideration for use. Because cleanliness is critical for these personal products, they note that the best way to clean nonporous ABS is with mild  or antibacterial soap and water, a toy cleaner, or rubbing alcohol: “rinse, clean and dry it and you are ready for round 2.”

Those who back the campaign will be rewarded with early bird pricing on their personalized designs. The earliest backers can get a €29 special price (about $36 USD), with the next earliest receiving their product for just €49, and further backers receiving a €69 pricing level. For those who really believe in the PYOD mission, a €500 pledge will get you a “Professional Backer” package, wherein you work with a 3D designer to “design your ultimate toy.” Video of the app in action suggests that the final products’ prices will be adjusted based on each design.

PYOD stresses that every aspect of their operation is discreet. Your backing won’t show up on Kickstarter or be linked in any way to you publicly. After all, this is a personal business, so privacy is a principal concern.

The Kickstarter campaign has a one-month run. If the project goal is met, PYOD will finalize their app and packaging designs in January, and in February will begin their beta test period with Kickstarter’s early backers. Come March, PYOD aims to bring the app to all its backers and ship out 3D printed products. Following the projected success of those steps, PYOD will be fully open for business and available to anyone in April 2015.
