AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’ Gets 3D Printed with Portrait of Daryl Dixon

2AMC certainly hit gold with their hit TV show The Walking Dead. There is something about zombies and people getting attacked by zombies that has the ability to garner interest from those of all walks of life. Based on a comic book series, it certainly has taken off more than even the most optimistic fans could have hoped. In the midst of its fifth season, the show continues to create interest with intriguing storylines and interesting characters, and in fact just broke a record with over 17 million viewers tuning in for the season five premiere back in October. Now with a sixth season confirmed, fans have even more reason to get excited about who may be the next character to fall to the wrath of the zombies.

One company, called 3Denovo, is known for creating quite the unique pieces when it comes to 3D printing. Their site, which isn’t fully launched yet, is a 3D printing marketplace that allows people to buy, sell, and share their 3D designs with one another. The company also happens to be a big fan of The Walking Dead, particularly one of the show’s most popular characters, Daryl Dixon.

3Denovo decided to use the technology that they had on hand to create a detailed 3D print of Daryl Dixon, and the results turned out quite phenomenal.

Modeling in ZBrush

“We all know that making a sculpture [with] 3D printing is not a new thing,” Judy Tang of 3Denovo tells 3DPrint.com. “President Obama became the very first president who had his self portrait 3D printed. Like our other [projects], we searched for ideas from pop culture, hoping that what we [create] could be attractive to the masses. The Walking Dead was a theme [that] we couldn’t miss. For such a show, we thought the best way to maintain its visual impact was to directly print a portrait of the most recognizable characters, Daryl Dixon.”

And that’s exactly what they did. The team at 3Denovo used their skills with ZBrush to create the intricately detailed statue of Dixon. They then painted it with acrylic colors after it was 3D printed.

“The printing process is not hard at all,” Tang tells us. “What really is tricky is designing and post processing because we need certain skills to make it look real.”

Dixon’s crossbow and the base of the statue are completely removable. While the model is not “functional,” it is certainly quite the masterpiece that just about any Walking Dead fan would approve of.

While 3Denovo has not been launched quite yet, Tang tells us that once they are fully launched, this Daryl Dixon model, along with many other unique 3D printable models, will be made available for anyone to download and then 3D print at home.
