The additive manufacturing trade show Formnext is arguably the biggest event in the AM industry in Europe, if not in the world. The annual event, held in Frankfurt, Germany, hosts more than 780 companies exhibiting at this year’s show, representing all areas of 3D printing, including printers, materials, adopters, services and more.
With Formnext 2019 fast approaching, the attending additive manufacturing companies are ramping up their hiring. i-AMdigital has looked at the demand for talent amongst exhibiting AM companies at Formnext 2019.
The company identified that 1535 positions have been posted by 193 of the exhibiting companies. This is a significant number and is indicative of the continuous demand for talent amongst global AM businesses.
Dominating these available jobs is the Sales & Marketing discipline, that takes up 22% of all the available jobs at Formnext. This discipline is followed closely by R&D & Engineering and Production & Operations disciplines with 18% and 17% of the jobs, respectively:

- Production & Operations: 17%
- Software: 14%
- Service: 7%
- Applications & Consulting: 5%
- Materials Science: 4%

The report highlights the top 10 companies recruiting the most at Formnext 2019. Formlabs and HP are dominating the chart, each recruiting for 116 and 114 jobs, suggesting they are in a serious expansion mode:
Furthermore, the report digs into the top companies recruiting in each of the disciplines within Additive Manufacturing jobs.
HP is recruiting more than three times as many people in Design related roles than any of the other companies. Equally, HP is likely beefing up their Product Management teams as they are recruiting more than four times as many Product Management positions than any other company. This could suggest that HP is ramping up their efforts in supporting their customers with the machines to meet the need of weight reduction, cost reduction and material requirements.
Unsurprisingly, the two largest disciplines that are being recruited for (Sales & Marketing and R&D & Engineering) are dominated by the most recruiting companies HP and Formlabs. The focus on Sales & Marketing jobs could indicate that both HP and Formlabs are ramping up their sales and changing their approach to more direct sales requiring internal sales teams.
The Materials discipline is rather equally split among hiring companies, but with Builder 3D Printers, HP and Desktop Metal slightly in the lead.
The Belgian born company Materialise is dominating the demand for Applications & Consulting professionals. This could indicate an increased effort on retaining market share, as Materialise see an increasing number of competitors (like Autodesk and Dassault Systemes) coming into their traditionally dominated space of providing AM specific software. Materialise, together with Formlabs, are also dominating the demand for Software professionals.
Stratasys and Carpenter Additive are dominating the demand for Production & Operations professionals, and Formlabs, EOS and GE Additive are dominating the demand for Field Service Engineering.
