In addition to the dynamic live speakers each week of these two-week intensive courses, you’ll be guided by an industry expert mentor and facilitator, who will scaffold the class experience just for you. You’ll be exposed to the best 3D print design programs via live demos, and then asked to try your hand with both fundamental design techniques, as well as next-level techniques. Your facilitator will take you through the process, providing feedback and workshopping your design ideas with you. In our Beginner Design course, we’ll open with an overview of ways to think about preparing basic shapes for 3D printing, followed by a demo of Tinkercad, the easy-to-use 3D modeling program that allows you to turn your idea into a 3D printable design. You’ll then learn the practical skills of how to import 2D and 3D files for manipulation, use community-developed shapes, and create complex geometry holes.
In week two of the course, we’ll review how to prep your models for printing, and our speakers will share examples of hard to plate models to illustrate how to use different orientations for optimal results. You’ll also learn to recognize a broken 3D model and how to prevent designing one, using a polygon modeling tool called Vectary. We wrap up our course with a tutorial on the digital sculpting tool, Pixologic Sculptris, and learning how to make your designs functional and printable in 3D with our final project.
In our Advanced Design course, which begins right after Beginner Design wraps up, we’ll start with speaker sessions on vital engineering concepts that will improve your 3D designs for printing, including designing with tolerance, avoiding support materials, and creating assemblies. You’ll also receive a walkthrough of sketching and creating tools in Fusion 360. We’ll continue the week with more advanced engineering concepts to improve your final manufactured products, including animating assemblies, creating sophisticated material simulations, and post-processing techniques.
In week two of the course, you’ll be introduced to coding languages that will help you generate a multitude of design options and our speakers will demo how to use Openscad to code your designs, as well as sharing helpful information about accessing 3D printing services near you, and how to choose the best printer for your needs. The Advanced Design course culminates in participants creating and refining a original design that will be entered into a class-wide contest, the winner of which will be announced right here on 3DPrint.com!
