As we see virtual reality finally making a move into the mainstream, design programs like this will most likely become more accessible, and as the Gravity Sketch team points out, we are lucky to live in an era where this technology is available to everyone.
“With the right user experiences paired with this technology, it’s going to have a massive influence on how everything in the world is created,” they state on Kickstarter.
The intuitive nature of this design tool allows the artist to forget they are even holding anything as they work. Communicating ideas is seamless, and the designer is able to walk into the world that they have created. Eventually, as the company works further with their co-creation feature, you’ll be able to collaborate with others in real time, no matter where they are. On the tablet currently but soon to be extended to both the desktop and VR due to massive feedback and now with the help of their campaign, Gravity Sketch is already in use by thousands worldwide.

Meant for all creative spirits, and especially those who have been waiting to go full force into 3D, the new digital design tool is suitable for all ages and expertise levels, and is also perfect for the classroom to introduce kids to design as well as furthering STEAM learning. Animators will be able to add even more life to their creations, and game developers will probably be immediately drawn to the tools that allow them to expand their alternate worlds.
Gravity Sketch allows you to be completely creative and fully immersed in the world of virtual reality as you work—and play—with the software responding to the pressure you apply with the pen and motion, resulting in speed lines as well as control of the line thickness.
“Gravity Sketch unlocks your creations and gives you full control, fitting an advanced workflow for vehicle designers looking to pull rough concept sketches into a more controlled software package to animators looking to bring characters into a pre-designed scene,” states Gravity Sketch on Kickstarter.
The software is compatible with Adobe Suite and many other CAD packages. Models can be exported and shared in .obj or .stl format to be 3D printed. If you’re interested in checking out how that works, see the Gravity Sketch YouTube page for tutorials.
“Where 3D content is being created, we are there to make sharing ideas easier. From the start, Gravity Sketch VR has blown my mind,” says Pieter Limburg, head of business development for Shapeways. “I can’t wait to see people get their ideas from their minds into their hands.”
While the Gravity Sketch Desktop and VR license will sell for £45 ($60 USD), those backing the product on Kickstarter will be able to receive the software for £25 ($32 USD). Licensing is expected to be available in December of this year. Discuss further in the Gravity Sketch 3D Software forum over at 3DPB.com.
