Weekly Roundup: Ten 3D Printable Things – Spaceships

3dp-ten3dpthings_spaceships_bannerThis week I’m on vacation, but I didn’t want to leave you all hanging for 3D printing projects so I threw together a quick list for you. This week I decided to highlight spacecraft from some of the best science fiction movies, TV shows and video games of all time. All of the models that I selected this week are iconic in their own right, and also just cool looking designs. In reality space ships are probably not going to look like any of these designs, but it’s sure fun to pretend that they are.

So here they are, Ten of the coolest 3D Printable Spaceships from science fiction films and video games:

MILLENNIUM FALCON FROM STAR WARS

Fillenium Malcon by aaskedall

Found on: Thingiverse

Prints standing up.

Naturally I have to start off this week’s list with the most iconic spaceship of all time, the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. This model is designed to print standing up with no supports, however it may need a bit of a raft to stay standing up.

THE SPACE ARK FROM WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE

Space Ark by Jose Miraglia

Found on: MyMiniFactory
Cost: Free

Close up details.

One of the first science fiction films was When Worlds Collide, which told the story of a massive planetoid that was destined to destroy Earth, and only a handful of survivors would be able to escape by flying a Space Ark to an Earth-like moon. This is one of the first space ships made for a movie, and is a piece of Hollywood history.

NORMANDY SR-2 FROM MASS EFFECT

Normandy SR-2 by Daniel Schunemann

Found on: MyMiniFactory
Cost: Free

The Mass Effect series is one of the rare new properties that ends up becoming a massive hit. The SR-2 is the ship used in the second installment of the series, and while it closely resembles the SR-1 from the first game it is actually twice the size and full of more comfortable crew quarters.

DISCOVERY FROM 2001

Discovery from 2001 (XD-1) by metaform3d

Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free

One of the first movie spaceships to try to be more realistic, this 3D printable Discovery from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 is a fun printing project. The model consists of more than 20 individual parts that need to be assembled together, and each part is finely detailed. Some of the parts will need support, so follow the printing instructions on the Thing page closely.

More than 20 highly detailed parts.

LUCY FROM THE KILLJOYS

Killjoys – Lucy by Syfy

Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free

Killjoys is a new series from the Syfy network and is one of a handful of great new shows that they have been producing lately. This cool ship design is Lucy, their artificially intelligent ship that acts as their home and base of operation. The models prints in three pieces with two pegs that hold the parts together. There is also a 3D printed display stand included.

ESCAPE SHIP FROM ALIEN

Escape Ship From Alien. The “Narcissus” by aaskedall

Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free

After Ripley and her cat, the last survivors of humans, first encounter with a Xenomorph alien escape the Narcissus they survived thanks to this spaceship. It’s such a simple ship design, but it is one of the coolest ship designs ever. The model should print as a single piece standing up with no supports needed.

Prints as a single part.

SPACE INVADERS

Space Invader Family by Flykiki

Found on: MyMiniFactory
Cost: Free

No list of video game and movie space ships would be complete without the original video game space ships: the Space Invaders. These simple 3D printable spaceship models are perfect as ornaments, decoration or just as fun keepsakes from the game. No one has ever been sure if these are supposed to be ships or actual aliens, but I’m not even sure that really matters. Each of these cool designs is hollow and has a hidden compartment so they can be used as gift boxes or made to light up on a string of lights.

Hollow so they can be used as stash boxes.

JUPITER 2 FROM LOST IN SPACE

Jupiter 2 from Lost in Space by larry009

Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free

The original TV flying saucer was the Jupiter 2 from the classic science fiction series Lost in Space. The show may have resulted in a terrible movie, but the original TV show is still a blast. The Jupiter 2 is the home of the Robinson family and their nemesis Doctor Smith.

“Danger Will Robinson, danger!”

STARSHIP ENTERPRISE FROM STAR TREK THE ORIGINAL SERIES

Starship Enterprise by Neophyte

Found on: MyMiniFactory
Cost: Free

And of course this list would never be complete without the original Starship Enterprise from the classic Star Trek TV series. This simple 3D printable model of the iconic spaceship is made of four parts that will need to be joined, but should print with no supports needed. You can print it as a single color, or paint it to look like the ship from the series.

To boldly go…

ARGO FROM STAR BLAZERS

Yamato style Spaceship by kittka

Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free

The Argo is the starship that carried its crew to a distant land to save humanity from alien radiation. It was built from the wreckage of the Yamamoto, a sunken Earth battleship that gives the ship ist classic naval design. Star Blazers is one of those shows that wasn’t as popular as say Robotech, but the latter would end up being heavily inspired by it. This is a massive model that will need to be broken up into a few pieces to print on a standard 3D printer, but the finished product is well worth the extra work.

And there you go, ten of the coolest 3D printable space ships! If you decide to 3D print any of these great designs I would love to see them. Feel free to email me or send me a Tweet @SJGrunewald and say hi. Happy 3D printing!
