Sciaky to Provide Their Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing System to EWI

Of all the different types of 3D printing technologies that exist, all industry eyes seem to be set upon metal 3D printing, which has recently had a major impact on the aerospace, automobile, and medical industries, just to name a few. One of the most advanced and fastest of these metal manufacturing technologies is the Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing (EBAM), which was created by the Chicago, Illinois-based manufacturing company Sciaky, a subsidiary of Phillips Service Industries, Inc.

Last year, Sciaky revealed their expanded line of advanced EBAM metal 3D printers, which have been praised for their speed, reduced material waste, and reduced machining time. Since then, the metal fabrication company has continued to enhance their comprehensive 3D printing system with their advanced closed-loop control and print monitoring system. All the while, major companies like Lockheed Martin have utilized Sciaky’s 3D printing technology to help create titanium components.

Now, Sciaky has announced that the pioneer engineering and manufacturing technology organization, called EWI, has gotten their hands on one of their advanced EBAM 3D printing system. The Columbus, Ohio-based manufacturing solutions provider has been offering manufacturing support and services to a wide range of industries since 1984, and will now enhance their metal 3D printing capabilities with their purchase of a Sciaky EBAM system. With their newfound partnership, EWI and Sciaky will work in tandem to produce prototype parts for high-tech manufacturers from a variety of industries based all around the United States.

“Sciaky is very excited to work with an innovator like EWI,” said Mike Riesen, General Manager of Sciaky, Inc. “Beyond simply selling an EBAM system to EWI, Sciaky will collaborate with EWI to advance and promote EBAM technology into mutual fields of interest. New applications and solutions will surely be discovered under this exciting partnership.”

Their EBAM 3D printing technology is quite similar to selective laser sintering (SLS), but completely liquefies the metal wire feed instead of just melting the outer layer of the metal powder. Sciaky’s EBAM systems are able to produce parts ranging from 8 inches to 19 feet in length, and is also able to manufacture smaller and larger parts, depending on the application. According to Sciaky, their EBAM system has the fastest deposition process of all other types of metal 3D printing technology, capable of depositing anywhere from 7 to 20 pounds of metal powder material per hour. The 3D printing system includes a dual wirefeed option, allowing for two different metal alloys to be combined into a single melt pool, enabling the creation of components from a customized metal alloy.

With the wide reach and manufacturing prowess of EWI, Sciaky now has the opportunity to spread their EBAM technology across more industries than ever before. With this newfound and expansive partnership, their EBAM technology could soon become the breadwinner of all the metal 3D printing technologies that are currently in existence.
