Forget the fruits and veggies! Stop the presses, and behold: 3D printed gummies are finally landing in the United States. After much ado and brouhaha around the rest of the world, Katjes and the Magic Candy Factory have partnered with Dylan’s Candy Bar as their exclusive partner for domestic retail and online sales.
We’ve greedily followed the German candymaker, mouths watering, since the inception of their fabricated gummies and Magic Candy Factory 3D printer which has already been wowing fans in places like Dubai and even the Dublin airport with fantastical stores that will remind you of Willy Wonka and Disney rolled into one.
The result, no matter how you slice it, print it—or which country you get it in—is confectionery magic. And for many, with the making of these sugary delights comes a mini-education in the technology of 3D printing too. There’s simply no better to way to get the public’s attention than with food—and customers delve into ordering their candies by first learning to use an app that tells the gummy 3D printer exactly what to make as they customize their candies accordingly. Users can even write messages or draw their own designs. Once they have been made—and that takes about five minutes—the gummies go into a ‘post-processing’ that consists of being topped with a variety of sugars, sprays, and glitter.
“The Magic Candy Factory is a one of a kind innovation and we are so excited to bring our 3D printed confections to the USA. I have been a fan of Dylan’s Candy Bar since I started in the confectionery industry 6 years ago,” says Melissa Snover, Managing Director of Magic Candy Factory. “Their incredible experimental retail environment and ‘customer comes first’ service make them the absolute perfect fit for the magical innovation we developed.”
Working together, Dylan’s Candy Bar and the Magic Candy Factory will be offering eight colors with flavor combos, from ‘Sublime Strawberry’ to ‘Beautiful Blackcurrant.’ The 3D printed gummies will be available online, as well as in the following Dylan’s Candy Bar stores, launching there today, through June 1, with a nationwide consumer weekend celebration June 9-10. Store openings are:
- New York City’s Flagship 3rd Avenue and Union Square locations—Friday, May 20
- Chicago—Monday, May 23
- Los Angeles—Saturday, May 28
- Miami—Wednesday, June 1
“Magic Candy Factory is an incredible innovation. Dylan’s Candy Bar has been excitedly watching the trends in candy personalization,” said Dylan Lauren. “We can’t wait to dazzle our customers with the magic creativity of Willy Wonka’s factory, merged with modern day technology!”
Dylan’s Candy Bar also has a presence in numerous airports, from New York to Houston to Detroit, and it’s obvious to see how those venues might be popular later too as those with a sweet tooth could pop in and do some candy 3D printing during a layover. Between the two companies, they should be able to come up with limitless expansion ideas.
The Magic Candy Factory team, led by Melissa Snove, has also just this year won several awards, to include the Free From Food award, World Food Innovation award, and the First Prize for Top Innovation from ISM. All of their candies are vegan, gluten-free, and dairy free, made with vegetable based gelling agents and all natural fruit and vegetable extracts. Are you ready to try your hand at making some?
