Last month Doctor Who fans received some pretty big news when the series’ controversial showrunner Steven Moffat would be leaving the show and taking fan favorite Doctor Peter Capaldi with him. To say that it was a mixed blessing for many fans is an understatement. Many fans of the show, even those who like Moffat, felt that it was probably best that someone else get a chance to run the longest-running science fiction show in history. But sadly, losing Capaldi is a really hard pill to swallow.
But if there is anything that can be said of Doctor Who it’s that change is always inevitable, even if some of that change comes far too soon for some fans. While I, and the entire fan base, struggle with the year-long wait until we get to see some more Doctor Who, and Capaldi and Moffat’s last episodes, I thought it would be fun to find some of the coolest 3D printable Doctor Who-themed models that the interwebs have to offer.
So here are Ten 3D Printable Doctor Who Things.
LIGHT UP TARDIS REPLICA
Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free
I can’t start off this list without this awesome TARDIS replica. The model was created from the official blueprints from the BBC production, and the attention to detail is meticulous. All of the parts were designed to snap together without the need for any glue. While you could easily print this out in any color and paint it, it’s a nice enough design that it can just be printed in blue filament.
DOCTOR WHO CHESS PIECES
Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free
If you’re a Doctor Who super-fan then this fantastic Doctor Who-themed chess set is a must have. Just print the set out in two different colors or go ahead and paint the pieces two different colors. I also think it would be kind of cool to print these pieces out in two different metallic filaments and buff them up a bit. You can use this guide to polishing metallic filaments here if you decide to make them with metal filament.
DALEK-SHAPED SALT & PEPPER SHAKERS
Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free
Doctor Who up your kitchen with these adorable little salt and pepper shakers that look like everyone’s favorite evil trash cans on wheels, the Daleks. You’re going to have to use a small drill to put some holes in the tops of the shakers, but beyond that this should be a pretty easy 3D printing project. Make sure that you print one out in white and one out in black so you don’t accidentally mix them up.
TARDIS LIGHT SWITCH COVER
Found on: MyMiniFacory
Cost: Free
This TARDIS-shaped light switch plate is a simple 3D printing project that should be easy for any skill level. It was designed to slip right on top of the existing plate, so there shouldn’t be any safety issues with using it.
And personally, if ever there was a 3D model that needs to be made using glow in the dark filament, this is it.
TARDIS WALL OUTLET PLATE COVER
Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free
And of course you have to have a matching wall outlet plate cover to bring your nerdy Doctor Who-themed room together.
LED TARDIS PENDANT
Found on: Cults
Cost: Free
Adafruit honestly comes up with the best 3D printing projects around, and this great light-up TARDIS pendant is a perfect example. It can be sized up or down, depending on your needs, worn around your neck or hung on a Christmas tree. And because it is an Adafruit project they have easy to use instructions for installing the LED lights and assembly all of the parts.
TARDIS PENCIL CUP
Found on: MyMiniFactory
Cost: Free
While the designer intended this model to be used as a pencil cup, it has a lid so it really could be used for anything. It’s a pretty simple model so it isn’t going to need any support material to print, and it should look great printed on just about any model 3D printer.
MINI DALEK ARMY
Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free
You can’t have a Doctor Who collection without a bunch of Daleks, and this simple little figure can be printed in all sorts of different colors. You can print out a whole bunch of these little guys, mix and match all of the parts, and you’ll have a unique and colorful army of Daleks.
MINI TARDIS CABINET WITH DRAWERS
Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free
I know, there is a lot of TARDIS stuff on this list, but it’s so iconic that designers have turned it into some of the coolest stuff. This neat little miniature cabinet has some tiny drawers inside of it, so you can organize your office supplies, or even put it in your bathroom and fill it with toiletries. Depending on the size 3D printer that you have you can even bump up the scale of the model and turn this into a cool jewelry box.
DOCTOR WHO-THEMED COOKIE CUTTERS
Found on: Thingiverse
Cost: Free
And of course, one of the best things about 3D printing is all of the great cookies cutters that you can make in just about any shape, size or design that you can think of. (As ever, being sure to use food-safe materials!) And if you can think of it, then chances are that someone else has already thought of it and made them for you. Make a batch of TARDIS- and Dalek-shaped cookies for the holidays, for a friend, for a Doctor Who viewing party or just because you’re hungry. The designer also created a CyberMan version of cookie cutters to join the party.
