I gave up coffee about four months ago for no particular reason, and this 3D printed coffee brewer is giving me a very good reason to return to the wonderful world of my favorite, cold brewed coffee. “Why cold-brewed?” you ask, and many have. I live in Florida and just prefer my coffee cold almost year round. But there’s another reason too: I am cheap and lazy. I grabbed a large empty pickle jar one time, put my grounds and water in it and stuck it in the fridge overnight. The next day I was amazed at how easy that is, and named my concoction — which did not even need to be filtered as the grounds stayed firmly on the bottom of the jar — “cowboy coffee.” Friends thought I was crazy until I found the exact same cold brewing process recipe in a Gourmet Magazine article.
But we’ve come along way from my cold brewing cowboy coffee technique to a 6 flask Coffee Cold Brewer — that is also 3D printed! Just from looking at the thing, which looks like a beautiful avant garde chemistry lab experiment, you’ll realize we’ve come a long way from home on the range when it comes to cold brewing…
First off, the idea of having six different flasks is brilliant, because you can stay relevant to the contemporary demands of modern coffee drinkers, although your coffee maker doesn’t have an electric cord. With six different flasks you can always brew six cups of coffee at one time using different beans. Simplicity doesn’t have to sacrifice diversity here, and that was exactly the designer’s idea: That’s the first thing I like about this design.
The full-time Instructables designer, JON-A-TRON (Jonathan Odom), who came up with this thing of beauty and grace, has more to say about it:
“I designed the piece in Fusion 360 (my go-to free 3D design and CAM software). 3D printing is a breeze with this program, making my life a lot easier with so many parts. I explored the idea of making a linear one (the all-[too]-common setup at your typical hipster coffee bar), but I thought a radial design would have a nice effect, and would also make the brewer more of a centerpiece. After all, the whole point of taking all this time to design and fabricate the thing is to draw attention to it; to make an event out of the slow process of cold brewing.”
