Cruise Passengers’ Souvenirs Go 3D: Costa Cruises and Labs3D Offer 3D Printed Selfies

I have never been on a cruise, but it seems like a given for entertaining adventures. After all, how can you send a whole bunch of strangers out to sea on a vessel filled to the brim with booze and food, with dozens of other activity options besides eating and drinking, and not have an instant party? Well, the party just got even more wild now that the Italian Costa Cruises offers some of its passengers exposure to 3D printing in a most unforgettable way. Passengers will be scanned to make 3D printed selfies! Go figure…

Cruises are such memorable experiences that many people grovel to find that right souvenir to commemorate their time on the great big ship in the sea. Well, look no further than your own 3D printed selfie figurine as the perfect commemorative item. (You can wear any outfit to do this, which is where the fun really begins.)

Partnering with Barcelona-based Labs3D, a company that specializes in 3D scanned and printed figures, Costa Cruises offers passengers the same opportunity. Here’s how they explain the process:

“Shipboard experts will complete a full body scan using a handheld scanner in minutes. After capturing every detail of a person — from hairstyle to arm position — the file generated by the software program is sent via secure link to the Labs3D studio in Barcelona. There, the file is processed in a 3-D printer, creating a miniature three-dimensional likeness of the guest.”

The 3D printed selfies are available in five sizes: 5-1/8 inches tall, 6 inches tall, 6-11/16 inches tall, 7-1/2 inches tall and 8-1/4 inches tall. Prices start at €89 (US$97) plus shipping expenses.

Scanning services take place onboard, and Labs3D provides the 3D print job. Won’t you be excited once the cruise is over and you are settling back into your usual drab life, where ever day isn’t a party on the high seas, to receive your 3D figurine of your better self in the mail? The one who managed to party like a rock star but not fall off the side of the ship?

Also, it’s important to mention that not all of the cruise line’s passengers get this opportunity to commemorate their cruisin’ time with a 3D printed selfie. Costa Cruises notes that these 3D printed figures are only available to those on seven-day cruises in the western Mediterranean on the Costa Diadema.

Hey! There are already plenty of reasons to try a cruise out and Costa Cruises just added one more!
